Infants

SimplySmart’s Alpha program focuses on each child’s unique development.

Our educators are knowledgeable on early childhood development and understand that each child blossoms in his own special way. This is why we take the time to get to know your infant before they begin care with us by asking each parent to fill out our Alpha Information Sheet so we can know how to best care for your infant. Once your child is settled in the class they will enjoy age-appropriate lessons to help them develop pre-math and pre-reading skills. Parents can read about their child’s fun-filled day in our parenting app’s daily reports.

Curriculum

Our Alpha Program is built around the interests and needs of the infants.

Our educators observe the children through regular interaction and fill out our observation sheets based on the Four Foundations of the How Does Learning Happen play-based curriculum in Ontario.  This helps them to track each child’s development and plan lessons that are relevant to each child’s learning goals. The educators in the Alpha class plan activities that involve fine and gross motor development, and sensory play which helps to build problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. They engage the infants in intentional play and teach through scaffolding while bonding with their young students.

Sign Language

Our educators use sign language with the infants on a daily basis to encourage language development and communication. Sign Language has been known to help children understand and use spoken language earlier as well as decrease crying and whining in infants and toddlers. ASL also promotes a strong bond between an infant and their caregiver and can potentially increase their IQ! ASL flashcards are posted in all of our Alpha classrooms to help both educators and parents learn popular infant signs.

Development Goals

Social/Emotional Developmental Goals

Responding to adult or peer interaction with facial expressions, gestures, vocalizations, or body movements.
Imitating adult behaviours during imaginative play, showing an understanding of common interactions.
Interacting with others in simple games, such as peek-a-boo.
Observing and responding to others.
Using gestures and sign language to connect and communicate needs and wants with others.

Cognitive Developmental Goals

Focusing on play or during interaction with others. Being able to disengage then return attention when interacting with others.
Working to achieve a particular goal and using problem-solving skills to create a desired outcome. For example, crawling under something to get an object that is out of reach.
Repeating actions that produce a specific outcome.
Engaging in special exploration by using their bodies to explore in and around things.
Increased capacity of recognition; recognizing objects or people from previous interactions.

Language Development Goals

Making eye contact with others, looking at a person when being spoken to.
Looking at books, photos, and objects of play with an adult.
Using sign language to indicate needs and wants. Shaking their head ‘no’ when they don’t want something. Showing intentional communication using basic language, facial expressions, or gestures.
Responding to simple verbal requests, pointing to objects when requested, looking at something when indicated.
Beginning to use one-word sentences or prompts. Saying ‘no’ or repeating familiar names.

Physical Development Goals

Reaching and holding onto smaller items. Manipulating small objects using basic hand movements, such as holding a crayon using a palmer grasp to make marks on paper.

Moving and manipulating their bodies to fit into or move through various spaces.
Walking and running with developing control.
